Excerpt from the article "How to Memorize your lines and Own your Dialog" written by Sara Marma for Almost Famous Magazine"I think every actor is a complete individual, and memorization comes with the territory, some are really fast memorizers and others have big problems with it," says Elisa Eliot, a Yale-trained acting coach whose resume includes appearances on Nip/Tuck, MTV, E!, Nickelodeon, the WB and numerous film projects. …The first step, says Eliot, is figuring out how you learn best. "I try to figure out whether {my student is} a visual learner or an audio learner--whether they can see it or hear it better, Eliot says. She recommends "audio learners" record themselves as they recite lines aloud with a scene partner, play it back for review and repeat the process several times. Eliot's students who are "visual learners" receive flash cards with their cue written on one side and the line on the other. For both types of learners, Eliot suggests writing or typing out your scripts and saying the words out loud as you put them down on paper. |
